Reckon by AL.com and Alabama Media Group’s political cartoonist JD Crowe interviews four former homeless veterans while drawing their pictures. Howard, Brandon, Jerrell, and Larry were homeless veterans. They have now found homes through Housing First, Inc. Housing First, Inc. is a non-profit organization in Mobile, Alabama that assists the homeless in finding housing through community collaboration.

The fifth annual American Legion’s veterans’ retreat took place in Wetumpka, Alabama August 2-4, 2019. The retreat is for veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injuries. The retreat has served over 250 veterans. Out of the veterans served, none have been lost to suicide. In this video, veterans share with Reckon’s political cartoonist, J.D. Crowe, about times in their life when they were suicidal.

Reckon and AL.com videographer Amanda Khorramabadi and Reckon's political cartoonist J.D. Crowe were invited to attend Stand Down Together Huntsville, a 3-day event which brings homeless veterans in off the streets for the weekend at the Jaycees Center, a large gymnasium-like facility in Huntsville, Alabama. While there, veterans are assigned cots to sleep on and offered services such as haircuts and dental work, food, clothing and supplies they can take with them when they leave.
