Bryce Hospital operated for more than 150 years as Alabama’s state insane asylum and later a psychiatric treatment facility. Long rumored to be one of the state’s most haunted places, the historic building has now been restored as the Bryce Hospital Museum in Tuscaloosa.

Purchased by the University of Alabama in 2010 and vacated in 2014, the former asylum now tells the story of Alabama’s complex mental-health and civil-rights history.
